Plate and Cereal Bowl Aid Weight Loss for Obese Diabetics

Canadian study shows that a plate and cereal bowl can help obese diabetics to lose weight as such dishware can provide proper portion sizes. In controlling the amount of food of these diabetics, they can use less of their glucose-controlling medications.

The plates can contain only enough amount of food to reach the recommended 800-calorie meal for men and 650-calorie meal for women. These plates are divided by a painted line that indicates areas for proteins, carbohydrates, vegetables, cheese and sauce. On the other hand, the bowl can be filled with a 200-calorie serving of milk and cereal

The researchers from the University of Calgary found that the diabetics who ate from the portion-control plates and bowls had an average of 1.8 percent decrease in their body weight unlike those who didn’t use the dishware and lost only an average of 0.1 percent. Use of diabetes-medication was also decreased by 26.2 percent among those who used the wares in contrast with only 10.8 percent decrease from those who didn’t.

The study ran for six months and involved 122 patients with an average age of 56. Half of them used the diet-specialized dishware produced by U.K.-based company, The Diet Plate. The other half of the patients received the usual dietary assessments and guidelines by dietitians.

The authors of the study find important value in the results of the study since a 5 percent weight loss is clinically vital in decreasing mortality and morbidity among those with obesity-linked disorders such as heart attack. The study led to discovering an economical means of weigh control among obese diabetics.
