Socially acceptable drugs are said to be more harmful
In London- according to a British study conducted, alcohol and tobacco are more dangerous compare to some illegal drugs like marijuana and ecstasy.
The New landmark research found that alcohol and tobacco are more dangerous which means that they should be classified in such systems that are legal.
According to Professor David Nutt of Britain’s Bristol University and colleagues said that alcohol and tobacco are included in the list of the top ten most dangerous substances. This was said last Friday in the Lancet magazine. They base their studies on the frameworks for the classification harmful substances.
David Nutt and hic colleagues used three methods in determining the harmful effects of these substances. First, the physical harm to the user, second the drug’s potential for addiction and lastly the impact of the drug use in the society.
Nutt asked for the help of psychiatrist who are specialists in addiction and legal office with experience in medical expertise to give scores to 20 different drugs such as heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, amphetamines and LSD. According to the results heroin and cocaine ranked the most dangerous. Barbiturates and street methadone comes next. It was said that alcohol was considered to be the fifth most harmful substance and tobacco was in the ninth place.
It is reported that 40 percent of people get sick because of tobacco and are brought to the hospital. On the other hand alcohol is to be blamed for more that half of all the visits hospitals and emergency rooms get. In addition to that harm in the society is reported, damage among family relationships and occupying police services.
According to Nutt they will continue to debate within the UK that socially accepted drugs must be regulated.
